Why specialising might be the smartest (and most profitable) thing you ever do
You’ve heard the phrase:
“Jack of all trades, master of none.”
Now let’s add the bit people forget:
“…but oftentimes better than master of one.”
Cute, sure. But when it comes to running a business? The real money is in mastery.
If you:
- Quote faster
- Work cleaner
- Avoid mistakes
- Deliver predictable results
…because you’ve done this exact job a hundred times before?
You’re going to win.
Specialists aren’t stuck—they’re in demand
He’s the bathroom guy.
They do rental property loans for business owners.
She works with trades-based startups.
Everyone knows what they do. That makes them easy to refer, easy to trust, and easy to charge more.
Would you want a GP doing your heart surgery? Or a specialist who’s done it a thousand times?
When it matters—people want the expert.
Mastery scales. Generalism strains.
Generalists are slower. They’re learning everything for the first time.
Specialists? They know where the pitfalls are. They’ve priced them in. They’ve made the mistakes, fixed them, and documented the process.
As I always say: The punishment for good work is more work.
Be known for one thing. Get really, really good at it. The work will come to you.
The Pro(FIT)phet
