About Me

As a CPA, I spent over a decade helping business owners navigate every stage of their lifecycle.
Now I want to help yours too.

I'm James — founder of Tegus. I started my career in accounting in 2013 and spent over a decade inside real businesses before starting Tegus in 2025. This is what I do.

Why I Started Tegus

My job isn't to build a bigger business.
It's to build one that works for you.

Most business owners I've worked with want to grow — but they want to grow on their own terms. The problem isn't ambition. It's that nobody ever taught them how to structure a business so that growth actually delivers what they were chasing.

I started Tegus because I kept having the same conversation. Smart, hardworking people who'd built something real, but were working harder than ever with less to show for it personally. More revenue, more staff, more complexity — but not more freedom.

Growth is good. But it should be scaled to the right size for your goals — not just bigger for the sake of it. A business that gives you the life you want beats a bigger business that owns you, every time.

See your kids play sport on the weekend without checking your phone
Go on holidays knowing the place won't burn down while you're gone
Pay off your home without it taking thirty years
Retire earlier than you ever thought possible
Scale to the right size — not just bigger, but better
Grow at the right pace — without it consuming everything else

These aren't soft goals. They're the whole point. Every piece of work I do with a client traces back to one of these — because if your business isn't moving you toward the life you want, what are we actually doing?

My Background

Over a decade inside real businesses.
None of it wasted.

I started in accounting in 2013 — Monash University, Business & Commerce, then straight into practice. I earned my CPA and my Public Practice Licence and spent years as a partner at one of Australia's top-ranked accounting firms.

I did the tax returns. I did the compliance work. That was part of the job and I did it properly. But it was never the part that got me out of bed in the morning.

What I loved was watching businesses grow. Sitting with a client in year one when they were just getting started, and still being in the room with them a decade later when they had a proper team, real structure, and a business that had genuinely changed their life. I got to see all of it — the wins, the near-misses, the stupid mistakes, and the decisions that made all the difference.

It's always far cheaper and less painful to learn from other people's mistakes than to make your own.

That's what I bring to every client at Tegus. Not a framework from a book. Not advice from someone who's only ever read about business. Pattern recognition built from over a decade of watching real businesses make real decisions — and living with the results.

In 2025 I started Tegus. This is what I do. No tax returns, no compliance — just the strategic, practical, honest advisory work that actually moves the needle for business owners.
